Mahakalipadpu railway underbridge opens as a new southern gateway into Mangaluru

The Mahakalipadpu Railway Underbridge has opened to traffic, completing a long-running Smart City mobility project on one of Mangaluru’s important southern approaches. The underbridge was developed at an announced cost of around ₹50 crore, with additional associated works also carried out at the site.

The grade-separated crossing is intended to reduce conflict between rail and road movement and improve access for traffic entering the city from Kerala and southern suburbs. Projects of this type often deliver their biggest value through network reliability: fewer gate closures, more predictable travel times and reduced congestion around level crossings.

The opening also demonstrates the impact of resolving a single transport bottleneck within a wider urban corridor rather than viewing each road segment in isolation.
