Mangaluru region plans ₹300-crore shift toward underground power cabling
A large underground-cabling programme has been announced for Mangaluru, Ullal and Someshwara.
A major utility-modernisation programme has been announced for the Mangaluru urban region, with roughly ₹300 crore proposed for underground MESCOM cabling across Mangaluru City Corporation, Ullal City Municipality and Someshwara Town Municipality.
Within Ullal alone, underground cabling was estimated at ₹186.45 crore in the announcement. The system is expected to place cables around 1.5 metres below ground, replacing sections of overhead distribution and reducing visual clutter and exposure to weather.
For the construction and engineering ecosystem, underground cabling creates coordinated demand across trenching, ducts, reinstatement, utility mapping, electrical systems, traffic management and long-term maintenance planning. Execution quality will be critical in dense urban streets where multiple services compete for limited underground space.
